BROCKTON – The state Appeals Court affirmed the conviction of a man today who was sentenced in October of 2025 to serve 10-12 years in state prison for the rape of an underage girl at a migrant shelter in Rockland, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.

Cory Alvarez, 28, was found guilty of one count of Aggravated Rape of a Child with 10 Year Age Difference on September 12, 2025, after an eight-day trial in Plymouth Superior Court.

In an unpublished decision, the Appeals Court ruled that the Commonwealth met its evidentiary burden, various evidentiary rulings by the trial judge were correct, and the prosecutor’s closing argument was proper.

At approximately 7:06 p.m. on March 13, 2024, Rockland Police were dispatched to the Comfort Inn at 850 Hingham Street for a report of a sexual assault. At the time, the Comfort Inn was part of a state/federal program to provide housing and food for migrant families staying there. Alvarez resided at that address.

Upon arrival, Rockland Police encountered the 15-year-old female victim, who was then transported to South Shore Hospital for treatment. As a result of their investigation, Rockland Police developed probable cause to arrest Alvarez, and he was taken into custody.

At trial, jurors heard testimony that Alvarez’s DNA was located on the female victim.

“I am pleased that the state Appeals Court has affirmed last year’s conviction in this appalling case and has ensured that the defendant will serve a lengthy sentence before facing deportation once released,” DA Cruz said. “My office is proud to have prosecuted Alvarez and found a semblance of justice for the victim in this case. We will always stand and fight for vulnerable children in our community.”

Assistant District Attorneys Shanan Buckingham prosecuted the case, and Assistant District Attorneys Carolyn Burbine and Matthew Bryer handled the appeal.
