BROCKTON – State Police detectives are investigating the death of a pedestrian struck by an SUV while walking on a Brockton sidewalk this morning, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.

At approximately 8:01 this morning, Brockton Police responded to a call for a pedestrian struck on West Elm Street in Brockton. Upon arrival, police found a man on a sidewalk on West Elm Street, suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to Brockton Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:40 am. The victim has been identified as 66-year-old John Buckley of Bridgewater.

Brockton Police contacted State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office and an investigation commenced. The female driver of the vehicle that struck the victim, a white Mercedes SUV, appears to have been parking her vehicle in a space in the courthouse parking lot. Preliminary findings by State Police reveal that vehicle may have been driven in reverse gear approximately 100 feet in total, striking the victim on the sidewalk in its path. The truck traveled over the curb of the parking spot, over grass, through a curbed driveway, up a grassy hill, through bushes, over a sidewalk and across West Elm Street before finally coming to rest against a building. The SUV driver was extremely distraught at the accident scene and remained behind to speak with police. She requested medical attention and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of what appear to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver is not being identified at this point because no charges have been filed at this time.

The incident remains under investigation by State Police Detectives in the District Attorney’s Office, Brockton Police, State Police C.A.R.S. unit and Crime Scene Services.
