NATICK – The Massachusetts Parole Board has denied the release of a man convicted of Second-Degree Murder in relation to a 1986 Plymouth homicide, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.
The state Parole Board issued its decision yesterday against parole for Kurt Kegler, now 67 years old. Kegler appeared in front of the state parole board on February 12, where the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office appeared in opposition of his release. It was Kegler’s second hearing before the Parole Board.
Kegler will be eligible for another hearing in front of the Parole Board five years from the date of his last hearing in February.
On October 11, 1986, Kegler brutally beat Paul Rober to death in Plymouth. Kegler and his girlfriend reported to law enforcement that they witnessed an acquaintance commit the murder near Route 44 in Plymouth, but he later admitted to having committed the homicide after investigators found discrepancies between he and his girlfriend’s stories. He ultimately pled guilty to Second-Degree Murder on June 7, 1988, in Plymouth Superior Court and was sentenced to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole.
In its decision, the Parole Board noted Kegler has yet to complete any programs that would be conducive to his rehabilitation and has maintained an “adversarial relationship” with the Department of Correction.
“Our office applauds the Parole Board for not allowing Kegler to be released and for scheduling his next hearing for 2031. His clear lack of initiative and engagement with rehabilitative services demonstrate that he is not fit to reenter society,” DA Cruz said.
