BROCKTON – A Brockton man who cut off his GPS ankle bracelet and fled the jurisdiction mid-trial has been convicted of assault charges, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.
After a three-day trial, a jury deliberated approximately two hours today before finding Edsonly Jean-Paul, 32, guilty of one count each of Assault and Battery of a Family/Household Member, Aggravated Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, and Aggravated Assault and Battery.
At approximately 5:01 p.m. on February 6, 2021, Brockton Police were dispatched to 110 Pine Grove Drive for a report of an assault and battery in progress. Upon arrival at the address, Brockton Police were greeted by Jean-Paul and he invited them into the apartment. There, officers located a female victim bleeding from a deep laceration to her arm. The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center for treatment. Brockton Police commenced an investigation. As a result, Jean-Paul was placed under arrest.
At trial, jurors heard evidence that the female victim told Brockton Police that Jean-Paul stabbed her with a kitchen knife. Brockton Police located the knife, found with blood on it, in a kitchen trash can.
At approximately 4 a.m. on June 29, Jean-Paul, who was wearing a GPS monitoring bracelet as part of his conditions of release on this matter, cut off the GPS and fled. Authorities detected a GPS strap violation and the records were filed with the court. Efforts were made by Brockton Police and Massachusetts State Police to locate and apprehend Jean-Paul, and those efforts are currently active and ongoing.
Judge William F. Sullivan continued the trial in absentia and the jury returned the verdict today. Sentencing will occur after Jean-Paul is apprehended.
