BROCKTON – Massachusetts State Police and Brockton Police are investigating after a Brockton police officer was shot this evening, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.
At approximately 5:45 pm tonight, Brockton Police received several 911 calls reporting a male with a gun in the vicinity of 62 Taber Avenue in Brockton. Brockton Police officers responded and gunshots were fired. A Brockton police officer was struck, several times. The officer was taken to Boston Medical Center with what is believed to be non-life threatening wounds.
The alleged male gunman retreated into a house at 62 Taber Avenue where he remained holed up for several hours. Brockton Police contacted Massachusetts State Police, including the Massachusetts State Police STOP Team, and MSP negotiators, an investigation ensued. A perimeter was set up in the densely populated neighborhood. State Police and Brockton Police were in constant contact and negotiated with the barricaded suspect throughout the night. At approximately 9:30 p.m. tonight, preliminarily, it appears, the male suspect shot himself outside the home. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Additionally as part of this developing investigation, a male gunshot victim was located deceased inside a silver SUV in the vicinity of 62 Taber Avenue.
Neither the suspect, male gunshot victim or police officer are being identified at this time.
Preliminarily, this does not appear to be a random act of violence.
This is an active and ongoing investigation.
