Brockton Man Out On Federal Probation Arrested With Gun And Fentanyl

BROCKTON – A Brockton man is being held pending the outcome of a dangerousness hearing after he was arrested carrying a firearm and Fentanyl, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.

Massachusetts State Police and Brockton Police arrested Edson Gomes, 26, at approximately 4:00 p.m. yesterday. Investigators went to a third-floor apartment at #133 Ames Street in Brockton to interview Gomes. Gomes became agitated and police officers observed two bulges consistent with a weapon and Gomes was detained.

Massachusetts State Police and Brockton Police located a loaded Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun with a defaced serial number on Gomes’ person. Also located on Gomes were four bags of suspected fentanyl. Investigators sought and obtained a search warrant for the apartment on Ames Street. Inside the apartment, police seized cell phones, a digital scale, and a clear plastic bag containing approximately 33 grams of a white powdery substance. As a result, Gomes was placed under arrest.

At his arraignment today in Brockton District Court, the Commonwealth moved for a dangerousness hearing and Gomes will be held without bail pending the outcome of the hearing, scheduled for Monday.

Gomes is charged with one count each of Armed Career Criminal, Possession of a Firearm with Defaced Serial Number, Possession of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Trafficking Fentanyl, Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device, Possession of a Firearm with no FID Card, and Possession of Ammunition with no FID Card.  Gomes was previously arrested in 2015 for federal narcotics offenses and was on federal probation with stipulations that state Gomes is not allowed in the City of Brockton.
