BROCKTON – A man has been sentenced to serve 8-12 years in State Prison for a shooting a man in the leg in Brockton, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.
Last week, a jury deliberated nine hours before finding Kelby Correia (DOB: 11/12/91) guilty of one count each of Armed Assault with Intent to Murder, Aggravated Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Carrying a Loaded Firearm. Today, Brockton Superior Court Judge Angel Kelley sentenced Correia to serve 8-12 years in State Prison on the charges with three years of Probation to follow.
On June 13, 2015 at 6:15 pm, State Police and Brockton Police responded to a report of shots fired and a person with a gunshot injury outside the Oak Street Convenience Store. Arriving at the scene, police observed a male victim with a gunshot wound to his right leg. The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center where he was treated and released. Police reviewed video surveillance from a nearby pizzeria, which showed Correia and three other men in the moments leading up to the shooting.
“The year 2015 was a particularly bad year for gun violence in the City of Brockton, with nine murders being committed, five of which involved firearms,” DA Cruz said. “Prosecutions like today’s against Mr. Correia send a strong message that we are all working together toward a common goal and will not be deterred from our mission of trying to keep the streets safe.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney David Cutshall and was investigated by State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and Brockton Police.
