HINGHAM – A Duxbury man has been convicted of being intoxicated and pointing his firearm at a patron in a restaurant, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced today.
After a two-day trial, a jury deliberated several hours before finding James M. Doyle (DOB: 03/17/61) of Duxbury, guilty of one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. Hingham District Court Judge Heather Bradley sentenced Doyle to serve one year in the House of Corrections, suspended for two years. Doyle was also ordered to abide by conditions that he stay away and have no contact with witnesses in the case, submit to random alcohol screens for one year and stay away and have no contact with the restaurant where the incident occurred. At the start of trial, Doyle pleaded guilty to one count each of Carrying a Firearm While Intoxicated and Disorderly Conduct and was sentenced to one year of probation with the same conditions.
On Tuesday, March 22, 2017 at 8:48 pm, Hingham Police received a call from the Gourmet Garden restaurant in Hingham reporting that a person inside the establishment, later identified as Doyle, held a firearm to the head of a female customer inside the bar. Upon arrival, Hingham Police approached Doyle and found a firearm in the holster on Doyle’s waistband and reported that Doyle exhibited signs of being intoxicated. Doyle was placed under arrest and charged. Doyle did have a valid license to carry the handgun and the female victim was uninjured in the incident.
Doyle was a 26-year veteran of the FBI before retiring shortly after the incident.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Dante Annicelli and was investigated by the Hingham Police Department.
