BROCKTON – A Brockton man is being held without bail after he was arraigned on a Murder charge in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old in Brockton, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced today.

Tony Semedo-Cardoso (DOB: 07/12/88) was arraigned today in Brockton District Court on one count of Murder in the death of 16 year-old Alberto “Walter” Rui Tavares of Brockton.

At approximately 1:12 am on Friday, Brockton Hospital notified Brockton Police that a person who had been dropped off at the hospital emergency room suffering from a gunshot wound had died. Brockton Police contacted State Police Detectives and an investigation commenced.

As part of the investigation, detectives developed information that the victim was a front seat passenger in a vehicle driven by the victim’s brother. Semedo-Cardoso was allegedly sitting in the backseat on the driver’s side of the vehicle and in possession of a firearm. Semedo-Cardoso discharged the firearm, piercing the front passenger seat, striking the victim. Semedo-Cardoso and an additional back seat passenger fled the vehicle, and the victim’s brother transported him to Brockton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:05 am.

As a result of the investigation, State Police sought and obtained an arrest warrant for Semedo-Cardoso. He was taken into custody by State Police and Brockton Police shortly after 10 am this morning.

Semedo-Cardoso pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. He is next scheduled to appear in court on October 16.   The investigation is ongoing by State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and Brockton Police. The case is being prosecuted by Plymouth County Assistant District Attorney Brian Fahy.
