BROCKTON – A South Boston man has been indicted on a charge in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Brockton man, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.

Today, a Plymouth County grand jury indicted Cody Urban, 24, of South Boston, on one count of Murder.

On August 23, 2020 at approximately 9:51 p.m., officials from Good Samaritan Hospital notified Brockton Police that they had a stabbing victim come into the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Brockton Police responded and learned that the male victim was stabbed outside a gas station located at 81 Warren Avenue. Brockton Police responded to that address, secured the scene and contacted Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section to investigate.

The victim was identified as Samuel Rutledge, 31, of Brockton. The indictments allege that Rutledge was involved in an altercation with Urban. Urban allegedly stabbed Rutledge five times, and then fled the scene in a white motor vehicle. Rutledge returned to his car and an acquaintance drove him to the hospital. Rutledge was pronounced dead at 10:36 p.m. on August 23, 2020.

Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office sought and obtained an arrest warrant for Urban, and he was placed under arrest on August 27.

Urban will be arraigned on today’s indictments in Brockton Superior Court at a later date.

Assistant District Attorneys Elizabeth Burke and Jennifer Sprague are prosecuting the case.
