Massachusetts State Police Detectives Investigating Fatal in Scituate that Killed Bicyclist

BROCKTON — Massachusetts State Police Detectives are investigating a fatal crash that left a bicyclist dead along Route 3A in Scituate, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz has announced.

At approximately 6:30 pm last night, Scituate Police received several 911 calls reporting that a man was unresponsive in the roadway in the area of 109 Chief Justice Cushing Highway, Route 3A. Police and emergency personnel responded and rendered medical aid to the male victim before he was transported to South Shore Hospital where he was pronounced dead of his injuries. He has been identified as Howard Colby, 67, of Marshfield.

Scituate Police contacted Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, along with MSP-Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and MSP-Crime Scene Services Section, and an investigation commenced.

 Preliminarily, the investigation determined that Colby was bicycling along the side of Route 3A when he was struck from behind by a 2001 Mercury Marquis being driven by a 94 year-old man. The operator, who is not being identified at this time, stopped the vehicle at the scene upon impact. Investigators observed damage to the front bumper area and windshield. The operator was transported to the South Shore Hospital for evaluation.

The crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, MSP-Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, MSP-Crime Scene Services Section, and Scituate Police.
